Realtor Joy Reid charged with larceny

WELL-KNOWN realtor Joy Reid, 52, of Lot 247 ‘D’ Forshaw and Oronoque Streets, Queenstown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson yesterday, charged with theft.

Particulars of the offence, to which the defendant pleaded not guilty, said she, on July 1, at Wellington Street, also in Georgetown, stole a $35,000 wrist watch, property of Brains Watch World.

But Reid claimed she bought it from King’s Jewellery World and it stopped working, so she took it to Brains.

She said, at Brains, it was agreed that she would pay $19,000 for the repair. However, when she returned to collect it, she was told the cost is more.

Farida Reid, representing Brains, said the other Reid was informed of the price before the job was started and, only after agreement was reached, that the work began.

The Brains woman said, when the owner went to uplift the watch, she put it in her bag and ventured into a taxi without paying the additional sum.

She said she pursued the defendant, begging her to pay the money that the latter would have, automatically, had to find but the other woman refused to disembark the vehicle and the former sought assistance from two passing policemen.
The defendant Reid was granted $20,000 bail until July 17.
