New Zealand women overpower Windies

TAUNTON, England, (CMC) – Stafanie Taylor carried her bat for an unbeaten 58 from 56 balls, but West Indies Women lost, when New Zealand Women romped to a 52-run victory in the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 Championship yesterday. Taylor struck half-dozen boundaries in her second half-century of the competition, as West Indies Women unsuccessfully chased 159 for victory from their allocation of 20 overs in the fifth match at the Somerset County Cricket Club ground in Taunton.

West Indies Women continued to struggle with their batting, and only two others passed 10 – and they were opener Pamela Lavine and Kirbyina Alexander. They both scored 11.

The Caribbean side was undermined by the off-spin of Lucy Doolan, who completed a fine all-round match, when she captured three wickets for 16 runs from her allotment of four overs.

Deandra Dottin, West Indies Women’s captain Merissa Aguilleira, and Stacy-Ann King all fell cheaply to Doolan in the crucial middle overs, when their side would have been looking to accelerate.

And the run-outs of Debbie-Ann Lewis, Juliana Nero, and Alexander did not help West Indies Women’s cause either.

Earlier, New Zealand Women’s opener Suzie Bates lashed 11 boundaries in 60 from 39 balls and shared 94 with Doolan for the first wicket to give their side the platform for 158 for six off 20 overs.

Doolan struck two fours and three sixes in 41 from 38 balls, and a late flurry of 21 not out from Sara Tsukigawa helped to beef-up the total of the New Zealand Women, after they, too, suffered a middle-order collapse.

West Indies face four-time 50 overs World champions Australia in their final match today.
