Pedro’s five-goal haul steers Santos to a 9-1 win over UG

… Uprising beat Black Pearl 3-0
SANTOS striker Michael Pedro registered a five-goal haul to steer his team to a 9-1 hammering of the University of Guyana (UG) while Uprising beat Black Pearl by a 3-0 margin, when play in the Georgetown Football Association (GFA)/Western Union First Division Football Tournament continued yesterday at the Camptown ground with a double-header.

Michael Pedro registered a five-goal haul yesterday.

Pedro found his target in the 16th, 24th and 28th minutes to give his team a comfortable 5-0 lead at the interval as Christopher Williams and Jamal Downer had earlier found the back of UG’s net in the 4th and 6th minutes respectively.

Pedro, the son of a former national Under-19 player Michael Pedro (Sr), completed his five-goal haul in the 59th and 72nd minutes of the second session, while Joseph Payne and Jermaine Bamfield netted one each in the 47th and 61st minutes respectively.

Eson Pearson netted UG’s solitary goal in the 7th minute of the first period.

The 9-1 win means that Santos have so far scored 14 goals in two matches in the competition while conceding only one.

In their first game, they defeated Black Pearl 5-0.

In the feature match, which was reduced to 70 minutes due to a late start, Uprising captain Daniel Favourite registered a double in the 7th and 24th minutes, while former national player Omali Nassy netted in the 52nd minute.

Uprising went ahead from a counterattack down the middle of their opponents’ half of the field and the ball was played from the defence to Favourite, who raced down the middle, drew Black Pearl custodian Gary Mickle off his line and in the process over-chucked the ball but did well to retrieve it, dribbled the central defender and slipped it into an open goal.

The 2008 Premier league club who were relegated at the end of the season kept up the pressure and clearly enjoyed more ball possession than their opponents and it was in the 24th minute that Favourite, while lurking in Black Pearl’s 18-yard box, received a pass and slotted it into an open goal.

The period ended 2-0 in the winners’ favour.

In the second session, Uprising continued to launch attacks on the opposition and was justly rewarded when the ball was played from the midfield to Nassy who dribbled the entire opposition’s defence and beat Black Pearl’s custodian on his right side.

Meanwhile, the tournament will continue on Sunday at the same venue with another double-header.
