Murdered Guyanese construction worker to be cremated in Trinidad

As investigations by Police in Trinidad into the Saturday afternoon kidnapping, murder and subsequent dumping of the bodies of two Guyanese construction site workers continue, relatives of one of the dead men have announced that he will be cremated in the neighbouring twin-island republic.

Narad Sukhoo, 29, and Tameshwar Doobay, 22, who both hailed from Berbice, were at the time they met their gruesome end staying with relatives in St Augustine as they worked on a construction site not far away.

Sukhoo’s mother, Nadira, who along with his father, Baldeo, arrived in Trinidad yesterday, told the Guyana Chronicle via telephone that she had decided to cremate her son’s remains in the neighbouring island.

According to her, she left Guyana with the intention of returning her son’s body to Berbice; and while she is yet to view his remains, from the information she has received about the condition of the body when it was found, she does not want to bring it home.

She, however, has not yet decided on a date.

As a result of the new arrangements, the dead man’s sister Vashti and an aunt will wing out for Trinidad sometime today. A surviving brother does not reside in Guyana.

And, while the Chronicle has still been unable to contact any of Doobay’s relatives here, and with those in Trinidad still not wanting to speak, reports are they might still be making arrangements to bring his body back home.

Both bodies were found with gunshot wounds to the back of the head; and according to reports from Trinidad, the Police there are working on a number of leads in an effort to determine the motive behind the killings.

A Trinidad Guardian report yesterday stated that investigating officers are expected to make several arrests having pieced together information that the men were accused of stealing $800 from the home of a Central businessman.

Police, the report added, said the dead men had worked at the businessman’s premises, but left after witnessing the individual who had accused two other workers of the theft, physically assault them.

Asked whether she had heard of the allegations against the two men, Sukhoo’s mother said “I am hearing so much things since I come, I don’t know what to believe.”
