Corbin stepping down as PNC leader would be surprising

IT was History 200 under the great teacher Dr James Rose when a fellow colleague (name given) suddenly blurted out “thank God Christopher Columbus brought my grandparents to this part of the world”. I being a warm blooded Afro-Guyanese chided her for such a foolish statement. In fact, I went the full nine yards to tell her how ridiculous that statement was and that such words should never be uttered again.

Some 25 years have passed since her prophetic pronouncement and boy, was she correct, oh yes she was. You see she was referring to the decadence that is practiced in some parts of Africa, leaders who do not, or to use precise language will not demit office no matter how heavy a price the people pay.

Take a good look at Africa. History is replete with scores of power hungry despots Nkrumah, Gowon, Amin, Taylor, and currently Mugabe tops them all.

To my colleague I apologise; you were right. I am proud that Christopher Columbus did bring my fore-parents to this part of the globe.

However, my joy is somewhat muted when I look at the behaviour of some of our Black Leaders, namely those in the PNC’s camp.

It would seem that they do not know when their time is up or when to bow out gracefully and hand over the reins to someone else. From all indications it would appear that Robert Corbin is sick, very sick, but would he relinquish power and let another lead? To answer my own question, I doubt it. No! Never! He, like his predecessors would rather die than give up power.

So if there should ever be an announcement from Congress place that Robert Corbin is stepping down I would be very surprised because a miracle would have taken place. I believe in miracles, do you?
