New stipulation announced for food handlers

THE National Food, Safety and Control Committee of the Food and Drug Department has advised organisers and operators of take-away lunches, barbecues or fish fry and lime events, that it is now a requirement for any person engaged in the preparation, cooking and serving of meals, to be in possession of a valid food handler’s permit, issued by the Regulatory Authority.

A press release said the permit, valid for one year from the date of issue, will be issued when an individual has been exposed to the prescribed food hygiene training course, which comprises theoretical and practical sessions and on-site evaluation.

It said those involved in the mentioned events outside the city must visit the Environmental Health Officer of their respective Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) while those who operate in the capital have to go to the Meat and Food Hygiene Division of the Mayor and City Council (M&CC).

The release said full cooperation from all is expected in the interest of consumer protection and safety.
