$10M Government grant…
PUBLIC Relations Officer, Mr. Royston King, has announced that residents in the communities identified to benefit will be recruited for works being done with the first $10M Government grant to the Mayor and City Council (M&CC)of Guyana.
He said the municipality will employ 25 persons from each such area and interested persons should check with the Personnel Officer at Regent Street and Avenue of the Republic, no later than April 29.
Community involvement is integral to the success of this enhancement programme. It is likely to encourage ownership and the general progress of the city’s enhancement,” King said in a Tuesday press statement.
According to him, grading of parapets and verges would be done in six locations, Lodge Housing Scheme, Agricola, Cummings Lodge, Cummingsburg,
Le Repentir Cemetery, Tucville, Block One (between Lamaha Street and Church Street and Main Street to Camp Street), Block Two (between Lamaha Street and Church Street and Camp Street to East Street), Block Three (between Wellington Street and Avenue of the Republic and South Road to Church Street).
King said drainage operations, estimated to cost $22.5M, are ongoing in North and South Ruimveldt and desilting of streets and alleyway drains are moving apace in the North and South Cummingsburg wards, costing $4M.
The statement said the thoroughfares to get attention are in Cummings Lodge (First, Second and Sixth streets); Lodge (North and South of the Housing Scheme); the Cemetery (Louisa Row, Broad Street, Howes Street and Martyrs Road); Tucville (Jackson Street) and Agricola (Kato and Titus Streets).
King said M&CC will also be purchasing Daewoo skidsteers, 290 M/F tractor and a Caterpillar backhoe and do repairs to skip bins.
He said the works are expected to start on May 2 and the M&CC has already started to procure the requisite resources.
It has organised its different departments and sections to carry out public health, law enforcement and other technical tasks in the communities where enhancement would be undertaken, King said, adding that the Administration will use an inter-departmental approach.
The $10M monthly pledged in a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding will be disbursed on condition that City Hall, to the satisfaction of the Government, implements a work programme and achieve indicators for the preceding month as agreed between the parties.
