Fellow bus passenger denies trying to steal phone

LEVI Braithwaite, 21, of Lot 2177 North Ruimveldt, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Melissa Robertson-Ogle yesterday, charged with attempting to commit a felony.

He pleaded not guilty to having, on April 19, on Camp Street, also in Georgetown, attempted to rob Nicola Gomes of a cell phone valued $55,000.

Police Corporal Munilall Seetaram, prosecuting, objected to bail for the defendant, on the ground of prevalence of the offence and that Braithwaite gave an incorrect address to mislead the Court.

The Prosecutor said, were it not for other men, the virtual complainant would have been robbed.

Defence Counsel Jerome Khan said the defendant and Gomes were in the same bus and they disembarked at the exact location.

The lawyer said Braithwaite tried to speak to Gomes and her boyfriend became annoyed.

But the woman said the defendant held her hand and her shouts attracted two men who prevented Braithwaite from taking the phone from her.

The Court overruled the Police objection and set surety for Braithwaite at $30,000, pending his June 9 trial.
