Chattergoon hits century as Guyana finish season winless

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – Sewnarine Chattergoon stroked his fifth first class century as Guyana drew with Barbados yesterday to finish the WICB Regional four-day season without a win to their credit.

Unbeaten on 72 overnight, Chattergoon scored 111 before Guyana were dismissed for 360 in their second innings on the stroke of tea, setting Barbados 299 to win in a session.

Barbados then waded their way to 67 for one before the match was called off, with captain Kirk Edwards unbeaten on 29.

Playing at the National Stadium on the final day of the final round of matches in the first class tournament, Chattergoon got support from first-innings centurion Royston Crandon (39), leg-spinner Davendra Bishoo (39) debutant Vishal Singh (34), and tail-ender Esaun Crandon (31), to ensure there were no hiccups for their side.

Leg-spinner Nikolai Charles grabbed a maiden five-wicket haul, ending with five for 99 from 32 overs while Man-of-the-Match Kevin Stoute who made a career-best 186 and took three for 59 in the Guyana first innings, supported with two for 19.

Resuming from their overnight 167 for three, Guyana lost Vishal Singh at 228 when the left-hander was caught behind off Charles who also removed Chattergoon at 257 for five when the left-hander swept a catch to short fine leg after batting for 322 minutes, 206 balls and hitting 17 fours and a six.

Debutant wicketkeeper Delbert Hicks (6) was run-out just after lunch at 277 for six while Royston Crandon edged Charles to wicketkeeper Carlo Morris when 11 away from his sixth score above fifty for the season, as Guyana slipped to 291 for seven.

Esaun Crandon and Bishoo then combined in a stand of 64 for the eighth wicket to halt the rut as Guyana fought back after lunch.

Crandon was run-out at 355 for eight and five runs later, Veerasammy Permaul was leg-before to Charles without scoring. Bishoo was also removed by Charles who bowled unchanged from the northern end for most of the Guyana innings yesterday.

Set an improbable target in the 15 overs plus the mandatory 15, Barbados lost 16-year-old opener Kraigg Braithwaite for 15 when he failed to control a short delivery from Esaun Crandon and spooned a catch to short midwicket.

Guyana finished their worst ever regional season in the cellar position with 33 points from 12 matches while Barbados slumped from a reasonable good start to end with 60 points from their 12 matches.
