(GINA) Efforts have been made by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to prevent any imminent threat following the fuel spill at the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) plant in Kingston, Georgetown.
Executive Director of the EPA Dr. Inderjit Ramdass in an invited comment to the Government Information Agency (GINA) said efforts to contain the spill have been successful.
The problem occurred sometime Sunday evening and when GINA visited the scene yesterday workers were busy cleaning the drains, sections of Water Street and the Demerara River into which the fuel has seeped.
Additionally, a helicopter reconnaissance mission was executed to determine the extent of the spill in the river.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GPL Bharrat Dindyal who was on the scene said efforts have been made to prevent its effects on the supply of electricity.
Dindyal, along with Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn, was among those who conducted a thorough inspection at the plant. The spill occurred as a result of a breach in the fuel storage tank.
Dindyal said that the magnitude of the spill amounts to some 2000 barrels and although he foresees no immediate threat he is advising persons, particularly frequent users of the river, to be vigilant and careful.
Minister Benn who was also on site said the Ministry of Public Works and Communications also assisted, while the City Engineers department was tasked with keeping the kokers closed to avoid any further seepage into the river.
