Tractor accident kills second of two only sons

Father laments…
TWENTY-EIGHT-YEAR-OLD rice farmer Sudesh Persaud, of Sparta, Essequibo Coast, was killed when the tractor he drove Tuesday evening suddenly toppled into a drainage canal and pinned him under the water.

The tragic circumstances of his death plunged the community into mourning.

His father, Ganesh Persaud told the Guyana Chronicle his son was on the way home from the backdam when tragedy struck at around 18:00 h.

The elder Persaud said it is not clear what may have caused the recently purchased vehicle to overturn but speculated that the condition of the earthen dam, along which the victim was proceeding, could be a factor.

The Baboo Dam resident said his son had been using the heavy machine to pull out rice harvesters that got stuck in the muddy fields while reaping paddy.

The body of the deceased was found trapped between the seat and steering wheel, with the neck apparently broken when the machine was removed from in the canal.

The father tearfully lamented that he has now lost his only two sons within 10 months, the other, Arun Persaud, was riding his motorcycle along Hampton Court Public Road, also on Essequibo Coast, when it became involved in a collision with another vehicle and he died on the spot.

Both his sons met their demise submerged in water under vehicles, their father said.

The one who died Tuesday also leaves to mourn his wife, Urmilla Jeet, who, like his mother and other relatives, was still weeping and wailing yesterday as Police continued investigations into the fatality.
