NEC undertakes Georgetown seawalls clean-up ahead of Easter

THE National Enhancement Committee (NEC), in keeping with its ‘Let’s Nice up Guyana’ slogan, yesterday carried out a clearing exercise along the Georgetown seawalls in Kingston, ahead of the Easter holidays.

Members of the public were also invited to help with the task that started at 08:00 h and included weeding and removing garbage from behind the Pegasus Hotel leading to the Seawall Bandstand.

The undertaking was part of the NEC’s continuous pursuit of enhancing and beautifying the environment.

Speaking to the Guyana Chronicle, NEC Secretary, Ms. Wendy Grenada, who spearheaded the work, said the grouping, led by People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Member of Parliament, Mrs. Indra Chandarpal, was established in 1999.

Grenada further stated that the association was formed with the idea of joining with the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) to clean up Georgetown.

She said the group would usually go to different areas and undertake similar activities.

Grenada recalled them participating in preparations for the hosting of Cricket World Cup 2007, on East Bank Demerara and around the capital.

She appealed for more help to cleanse the seawalls surroundings, declaring it is “in a terrible condition” and does not augur well for tourism.

“We are going to have visitors coming here and we admonish patrons who come to the seawalls not to litter. We have bins in which to put the stuff,” Grenada said.
