GRA establishes tax advisory booths

…to advise public on filing of tax returns
THE Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) stepped up its activities yesterday to get Guyanese to file their tax returns before the due date of April 30 with the establishment of tax advisory booths at the City Mall on Camp & Regent Streets, N&S Mattai’s Supermarket on Water Street, and the Banks DIH Sheriff Street Quik Serv outlet.

The aim of having the booths located at well traversed locations is to ensure that as many persons are made aware of the filing date for their tax returns, and to provide them with information for the correct completion of the tax forms.

In a press release recently, the GRA had issued a warning to the general public that the due date for filing of returns on income, including corporation, property and capital gains taxes for all categories of taxpayers, including PAYE and self-employed, are due on or before April 30, 2009. Late returns will automatically incur a penalty.

The GRA has implemented the Total Revenue Integrated Processing System (TRIPS) which requires all taxpayers to have a Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN). This system automatically determines non-filers and late filers. As such, late filing penalties are automatically processed. Taxpayers are therefore advised to ensure that the filing of returns is done within the time specified by law.

The exercise of assisting the public with the completion of their tax returns is expected to continue for the remainder of April at the regional offices of GRA and at various locations in and around Georgetown.
