Annual Cheddi Jagan Memorial Cycle Road Race

Three days remain for cyclists’ preparation
THREE days remain for cyclists to get in adequate mileage in their legs, in order to be successful at this year’s Annual Cheddie Jagan Memorial 55-mile cycle road race, billed for Berbice on Sunday.

The event gets underway at 09:00h from outside the People’s Progressive Party/Civic office in New Amsterdam.

From there, the seniors and juniors will journey to #55Village before turning back to finish at Port Mourant, while the veterans and upright pedal pushers will journey to #52 Village and return to finish at Port Mourant also.

The senior defending champion is Alonzo Greaves, while Christopher Holder will defend the junior title.

Kennard Lovell and Dexter Wilson are the veterans and upright defending champions respectively.

According to race organiser and Guyana Olympic Association’s 2009 Sport and Youth awardee Hassan Mohamed, he is expecting over 45 cyclists to face the starter on Sunday morning and he anticipates keen and exciting rivalry.

For Greaves to make a successful defence of his title, he must stave off the challenges that will come from Darren Allen, Leer Nunes, Tyrone Hamilton, Robin Persaud, Warren McKay, John Charles, Tony Simone and even Holder among others.

Holder for his part will be wary of Geron Williams and Enzo Matthews, the two main threats.

Should Raymond Newton enter as a veteran, then Lovell will have his work cut out.

Over the years, the event which is sponsored annually by BK International Limited and which attracts a large following of both cyclists and supporters, has become one of the feature events on the Guyana Cycling Federation’s calendar and is eagerly looked forward to.

Sunday’s race is one of three that will be staged this year in memory of the late Dr. Jagan. The second one is billed for March 22 in the West Demerara area, while the final one will be staged on the Essequibo Coast.

Cyclists desirous of being transported to New Amsterdam are asked to be at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Main and Quamina Streets by 05:00h.on Sunday.
