Mother tells Court about assaults by remanded son

MAGISTRATE Chandra Sohan yesterday, at New Amsterdam Court, heard a pathetic narrative about an ungrateful son who is charged with assaulting his mother.

The virtual complainant, Bibi Isha said the defendant, Sahabit Chabilall, 20, who was remanded to prison until March 6, is the youngest of her eight children living with her at Cumberland, East Canje, also in Berbice.

Now accused of pelting her with a pot after she rebuked him over his behaviour, the distraught woman told the Court that, after investing in his education, she receives nothing from him but blows.

Isha said Chabilall would pelt her and turn off the house lights as early as 19:00h, forcing the other occupants to retire to bed.

She said he would also take away things from the home.

Isha said she built a separate house in the same yard for him but he does not want to live there.

“Is torment every day when he is on the smoking spree.” the woman lamented.

Chabilall faces a charge of threatening behaviour, as well, for allegedly threatening to burn his mother’s house. (Jeune Bailey Van-Keric)
