Dead: Haffeza Rohoman

THE post-mortem conducted on the partially decomposed body of 28-year-old Haffeza Rohoman, which was fished out of a canal at Helena Number 1 Mahaica, East Coast Demerara on Sunday last, has revealed that she died from blunt trauma to the head and asphyxiation due to drowning.

Reports reveal that her 22-year-old lover was recently arrested and is in police custody. Charges are likely to be implemented this week. Police sources disclosed that the woman’s lover alleged that he was towing her on his bicycle when they got into an argument. He claimed that Rohoman jumped off the bicycle and struck him with the bar. He alleges that, during a scuffle and while in a drunken state, he struck her twice on the head and she fell into a trench.

According to relatives, the mother of four had reportedly walked out on her husband and children four months ago, and had gone to live with another man.

Her children — aged five, eight, 10 and 14 — were being cared for by her sister and grandmother when she abandoned her previous place of abode at Tranquility Hall, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara.

Relatives had suspected foul play in her death, since Harinarine, who was described as an alcoholic, would imbibe with the deceased regularly. However, the man was also in the habit of beating the woman whenever he was drunk.
