NAFEEZA Mohamed of Lot 17 Bush Lot, Essequibo Coast was arraigned for allegedly transporting a 17-year-old female to Big Hope Backdam in Region 1, and harbouring her there for sexual exploitation from April 26 to May 31.The 28-year-old mother of three appeared unrepresented before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan on Tuesday to answer the charge of trafficking in persons, and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Prosecutor Corporal Deniro Jones told the court that the teenager is currently in protective custody with the Ministry of Social Protection, and that Mohamed had tricked the underage female into believing that she would have been working in the interior as a shop helper, whereas the woman forced her into prostitution.

He said the police, acting on a report of assault, had gone to the shop, where they met the teenager and learnt of her situation.

The prosecutor did not object to bail being granted Mohamed, but requested that same be substantial to ensure that she attends trial. Mohamed was initially placed on $300,000 bail, but this was reduced to $230,000. The matter has been transferred before the Matthews Ridge Magistrate for August 3 calling.
