With CG Honda motorcycle being dubbed the preferred getaway bike used by some criminal elements in the commission of crimes especially armed robberies, more so, within recent times, the Crime Chief Leslie James yesterday said that no one is being targeted by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) but from time to time routine checks and campaigns are the order of the day to ensure legitimate documentation and ‘people are who they say they are’.

He explained that they are also aware of the fact that some honest, law-biding citizens utilise CG motorcycle to traverse and go about their daily routine and at the same time, others use these very motorcycles to make a fast escape when committing crimes such like the recent attempted armed robbery on a businessman at Ramchand Auto Sales on Sheriff Street, in which 21-year-old Kevin Fields, was shot and killed.

James added that they have had a number of matters involving these motorcycles and it is the duty of the police to do checks with the stop and search technique and it is not a strategy to unnecessarily harass citizens.

He stated that they have had instances where the police stopped and searched persons riding these motorcycles and they lodge it because the relevant documents were absent and until they can produce the genuine papers the bikes are released to them.

The Crime Chief however, asked citizens to cooperate when they are stopped and searched by the police since it is random and not meant to target anyone because they have a job to perform and they need the cooperation of the general public.

James said that for some reasons, of which he do not wish to ponder some persons are using the CG motorcycles in the commission of crimes especially gun-related robberies and it is of serious concern to the GPF to weed out these suspects.

On the other hand, a few persons have expressed their dissatisfaction in the manner in which some ranks of the GPF approach them when riding their CG motorcycles. Although they don’t mind being stopped and searched they are disgruntled based on the attitude of some ranks.
