Wiltshire, Harding continue winning streak

SHOMARI Wiltshire and Makeda Harding continued to pick up wins as the Woodpecker Products Junior national squash tournament soared into its second day of matches last Thursday evening at the courts of the Georgetown Club. The night also saw commanding wins from Wiltshire’s sibling Larissa, as well as Kamir Khan, Michael Alphonso and Mohryan Baksh.
Harding had a not-so-hard time against Adriel Latchmansingh whom she took out 3-0 (11-0, 11-1, 11-1), while Shomari recorded double wins defeating Thursday night’s winner John Phang 3-0 (11-2, 11-2, 11-3), before racking up another straight-set win ending 11-2, 11-2, 11-6 against Nechemiyah Levans
For Larissa it was against Rebecca Low that she took a 11-2, 11-2, 11-2 victory.
In a night laden with straight-set wins, Alexander Cheeks and Matthew Phang were the only players to concede a set when they, respectively, turned back the challenge of brothers Anthony and Daniel Islam.
Lucas Jonas briefly challenged Samuel Ince-Carvahal, rallying to a 10-5 lead in the second game before conceding it 12-10 to his unrelenting opponent, who took the match by wrapping up the final game 11-4 for a 3-0 sweep.
Abosaide Cadogan, who showed further improvement from the recently concluded Skill Levels Tournament in April, when she played to defeat against Madison Fernandes, who won the game 3-0 (12-10, 11-3, 11-8).
Matches were expected to continue last night and into the weekend where play in the senior categories are set to get under way, with seniors such as Akeila Wiltshire and Caribbean junior champion Nyron Joseph yet to play.
The tournament, which is being hosted by the Guyana Squash Association, in collaboration with its corporate sponsor Digicel, continued last night at the Georgetown Club.
