A FORTY-SIX-year-old man appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Vigilance Magistrates Court, charged with the murder of his son, whom he allegedly stabbed on September 28 over a row for $200 to buy cocaine.Amernauth Chand of Annandale, East Coast Demerara, was not required to plead to the charge which alleged that on September 28 at Lot 81 Narine Street, Annandale, he murdered 24-year-old Mahesh Chand.

The man wept bitterly while he was in the prisoner’s box; he was unrepresented and was remanded to prison until October 27. The Guyana Chronicle had reported that on the day in question, Chand fatally stabbed his son twice in the stomach after the young man stood up in defence of his mother, who was being beaten for $200.
The incident reportedly occurred about 22:30hrs when the accused requested to borrow some money from his wife who refused to lend him; as a result, they had an altercation which turned violent. The victim who is their son was present and he intervened.
During the altercation, the suspect armed himself with a cutlass and stabbed the young man while he was in bed. He was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, the mother of the deceased, Tajeranie Chowtie, told the Guyana Chronicle that her husband told their son, “You take your mother side and stand up to me.”
The grieving woman related that there was a scuffle between the father and son after which the elder Chand armed himself with a cutlass from the kitchen. It was at this stage that Mahesh reportedly told his father that: “I big now,you can’t beat me anymore.”
Guyana Chronicle was told that the elder Chand became angry and attacked his son, even after the young man had gone back to his bed. The woman said when her husband attacked her son she fled the house in fear and went to hide in the yard in some bushes.
