“WE have an important duty on May 11, as we march to the polls, but one thing is for sure is that the people of Guyana will re-elect the PPP/C, as I am confident that we are going to win the May 11 elections resoundingly.”

Expressing confidence in the incumbent People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) Administration in the presence of a sizeable Middle Road, La Penitence crowd, was PPP/C stalwart Dr. Leslie Ramsammy last evening during one of the party’s public meetings.
Dr. Ramsammy stated that “on May 11 the people of Guyana united in development will make Elisabeth Harper the next prime minister of Guyana, as for the second time in history we will have a woman leader because of the PPP/C…and we will also lift the cup up as we will re-elect Donald Ramotar to continue as the President.”
Dr.Ramsammy stated that he believes in a PPP/C victory because the party has a track record of development and making Guyana a better country, although Guyana still has a long way to go; without a doubt, Guyana is a far better country than it was under the People’s National Congress (PNC).
He added that “Guyana is a free country where we all have a choice, and gone are the days when we went and voted and somebody stole our vote…today we can go to the polls and have a choice of any political party.”
In the last 20 years, Dr. Ramsammy said, they had taken a broken, bankrupt country and made it into a middle- income developing country, and this is also another reason why they will continue to win elections.
In high spirits, he called on the crowd to check the PPP/C’s records, and look at the advancement and developments which have been achieved over the years under this administration, while highlighting the fact that the A Partnership For National Unity and Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC)’s presidential candidate, David Granger, told persons to forget about the past; but this Dr. Ramsammy stated could never happen, because persons need to know how the PNC brought poverty and destruction to Guyana.
“We will move forward under the PPP/C, but we must never forget the past struggles which Guyana faced under the PNC,” said Dr.Ramsammy.
Meanwhile, apart from that, Dr. Ramsammy stated that the APNU+AFC has promised the people of Guyana better education, hydro-electricity and so on, but according to the Agriculture Minister, all their promises are based on initiatives which the PPP/C had already commenced, and they had even boycotted some of these initiatives by cutting the budgets allocated for them.
He highlighted progress in education, health, agriculture, and in the economy just to list a few, which the PPP/C Administration has made over the last 23 years, while also touting the PPP/C’s Manifesto, ‘Guyana 2.0’.The full list of issues includes: Economic Growth: Jobs, Income & Wealth Creation; Transformative Infrastructure; Enhancing the Well-Being of Our People; Fighting Crime & Protecting Our People; Fair Governance; and Guyana in a Modern World. The preview of the PPP/C manifesto details a vast number of policies and measures that are centred on these themes, which will be pursued.

YOUNG PEOPLE AND WOMEN
Dr. Ramsammy also stated that the PPP/C brings more opportunities for the young people and women of Guyana, reminding the gathering of the number of young people listed on the party’s list of candidates, compared to that of APNU+AFC, who claim to be advocating for more youths but yet their list of candidates display another image.
“Since under the leadership of the late President Dr. Cheddi Jagan, the PPP/C has been giving the younger generation a chance to be leaders, and as we go along we will continue to do so once we win the May 11 elections,” he said.
The younger generation apart, they have also given women a fair chance to contribute to the development of Guyana and again he noted that their list of candidates shows that 37% of the persons listed are females.
While according to Dr. Ramsammy, when the APNU+AFC presented their list of candidates just recently on Nomination Day, there was only 25% of females included in their list, while the law requires that 33% of the candidates on any political party’s list of candidates must be women.
This, according to Dr.Ramsammy, is an offence under the law. Therefore, the APNU+AFC ought to have been disqualified from contesting the elections but he noted that the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) gave them a chance to correct the deficiency.
He noted that the PPP/C consists of women with standards and quality, who are more than capable of contributing to the development of Guyana, and are not just women who were picked randomly.
On that note, Dr. Ramsammy disclosed that the PPP/C has shown its commitment to not only the young people and women, but also to the entire Guyanese population. Therefore, he stated, “we are calling on all Guyanese to walk with us as we lift the cup high in the air and march on to the upcoming General and Regional Elections.”
