Former CONCACAF and Trinidad and Tobago Football Association president, Austin Jack Warner, has successfully negotiated the first hurdle in his battle against extradition to the United States. The former FIFA vice-president, banned from all football-related activity, had Justice James Aboud agree with his attorneys over questions about the legality of the extradition request from the United States.
The judge granted Warner’s team leave to ask those questions before a trial could proceed.
Warner will return to court on February 26.
The United States requested the 72-year-old Warner’s extradition after an investigation into the activities of FIFA over the last 20 years suggested that he was involved in bribery, money laundering, and racketeering.
According to Warner, the government has been too quick to make a decision on him facing charges in the United States.
The matter, his lawyers charge, is far too complex to be rushed, saying they intend to bring out the difficulty in granting extradition in this particular case.(Sportsmax.com)
