THE University of Guyana Wolves, the institution’s Rugby team, carted off the Guyana Rugby Football Union’s (GRFU) one-day 7s tournament, held at its Turkeyen Campus yesterday. In what many called a tense final, the scholars inched their Defence Force counterparts 17-12 in the Trophy Stall-sponsored tournament.

The Wolves who held true to their names hounded the military unit with some physical displays to cart off the top prize.
A pair of tries by winger Godfrey Broomes, coupled with a conversion by Lance Adonis and a try by Jamal Angus, were the main reasons for UG’s triumph, though much praise was heaped on the pack leader Rondell McArthur.
On the opposing end, Patrick King and Avery Corbin were the fighting force as their captain Dwayne Schroeder also chipped in with a conversion, but in the end, the military could not run with the wolves.
However, GDF’s Corbin was handed the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
In an invited comment, captain McArthur said, “This is the first time we played a tournament on our home turf and we won this championship.
“It was very challenging because all these teams especially GDF came here today hungry for the championship. I must take my hat off to the guys; we have improved tremendously under coach Larry Adonis.”
He added that “the victory for our team means a lot“.
Before the men’s final, the Over-35 female team dominated their rivals to take home the spoils.
The Wolves will be happy with the form that they have found as they head into next weekend’s Banks DIH 7s tournament with momentum on their side; something they will need as the defending champions.
