UG social work students conduct educative exercises

STUDENTS of the Sparkle Youth Club, ‘B’ Field Sophia benefited greatly when final year social work students of the University of Guyana (UG) recently conducted a series of educative exercises at the club.

altAs part of their course programme students pursuing a Degree in Social Work at the UG were required to locate and work with a youth group in areas of numeracy, phonics, self esteem building and other related subject areas.
During the project which lasted some eight weeks, the youths were exposed to classes and sessions that dealt with child abuse, phonics, numeracy and other regular subject areas associated with a school’s normal academic curriculum.
Speaking to this newspaper, UG student, Cindy Tiwari related that the youths responded well to teaching sessions and in the long run saw great improvement in their confidence, intellectual status, and academic performance.
She added that after an assessment the students were grouped separately since it was discovered that there were many slow learners in the groups. She said this was done to ensure that slow learners were brought up to standard in all the areas touched on during the eight weeks period.
She noted that by the third week into the course students were better able to grasp varying educative issues with the help of ‘classroom aids’ which were used as part of the learning process.
A Christmas party was held on the conclusion of the stint and youths were given presents as token for their exploits during the course sessions. The club was also presented with work books to aid them in future endeavours.
