Trial of chickenpox-hit murder accused now deferred to Tuesday

THE trial of murder accused Michael Powley for allegedly killing Vishnauth Narine, called ‘Buddy’, had been postponed to Wednesday last because he was struck with chickenpox, and now it has been further deferred to next week Tuesday (March 31).When the case was called on the resumption on Wednesday, the prison authorities disclosed that Powley had not fully recovered and was at a stage where the disease could spread easily.

As a consequence, presiding trial Judge, Mr. James Bovell-Drakes, who was in the process of conducting a voir dire (a trial within a trial ) to determine the admissibility of a statement by the wife of the accused, and was obliged to make a postponement at that time, was again yesterday forced to order a further postponement to Tuesday, when it is expected the voir dire will continue.
Powley is indicted for the murder of Vishnauth Narine of Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara.
Narine was allegedly stabbed to death at Vreed-en-Hoop following a disagreement with the accused.
Attorney-at-Law, Mr Basil Williams is appearing for the defence while State Counsel, Miss Natasha Backer is prosecuting.
