MINISTER of Tourism Irfaan Ali yesterday handed over a cheque of an undisclosed sum to the Guyana Motor Racing and Sports Club (GMR&SC) yesterday to aid in their participating in this year’s Caribbean Motor Racing Championships (CMRC). The first leg of the event is set for the JamWest Raceway in Kingston, Jamaica and given the fact that Guyana will be defending both their country and champion driver trophies this year, the GMR&SC selected some of the strongest drivers and riders to carry the Golden Arrowhead in the Land of Wood and Water.

The father-and-son duo of Kevin and Kristian Jeffrey will once again spearhead the Group 4 Category, along with Danny Persaud.
Afraz Allie and Rameez Mohammed are down to contest in the Group 3 class and Chet Singh is the lone Group 2 racer.
Stephen ‘Valentino Rossi’ Vieira, his cousin Elliot Vieira, Paul Yearwood and Kevin Persaud are the riders on the team which departs on Wednesday, February 25 with Fly Jamaica.
Adding Fly Jamaica Airlines as one of the sponsors Minister Ali said that motor racing has shown that it can be heavily marketed around the Caribbean with the huge crowds at the venues in Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Jamaica and here at the South Dakota Circuit being a testimony of racing being part a true Caribbean culture.
According to the Tourism Minister, the GMR&SC should work closely with his ministry to ensure that the final leg of the CMRC which will be held in Guyana is one which reflects a true Guyanese flavour.
“Motor Racing has the potential to truly market Guyana,” Minister Ali explained to the gathering of racers and officials of the GMR&SC at Ministry of Housing boardroom.
Minister Ali was showered with praise by president of the GMR&SC, John Carpenter, who mentioned that a lot cannot be done without the involvement of the Government, this time which came through the Ministry of Tourism since motor racing is an expensive sport.
