PRESIDENT of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU), Gordon Derrick, believes the way forward for the ‘Beautiful Game’ in the Region is Unity. In an invited comment, the Antiguan who was elected to head the CFU for a second consecutive four- year term last Saturday, told Chronicle Sport about the immediate plan of the new Executive.
“The first thing is for the new executive to meet and really start the process of healing the Union which must be our priority.”
“ We’ll meet swiftly and put our ideas together so as to come up with the best way how we can bond again as a body. We cannot progress without unity, so within the next 90 days we will be implementing measures to bring about oneness in the Union.”
“We must first realise who we are, from where we are coming, and where we need to go”, informed Derrick.
Derrick, who had to overcome allegations of corruption in the Media and marginalization by another faction of the Union leading up to the elections, was able to secure the majority of the 31 votes to overcome the strong challenge of Trinbagonian, David John-Williams.
Speaking to Chronicle Sport minutes after the 39th Ordinary Congress of the CFU concluded at the Miami Sheraton Airport Hotel, an elated Derrick was full of praise for all the support that helped him retain the top position.
”I first want to thank God for giving me the strength and guidance over the last four years, and ask of his blessings and guidance over the next four years.”
“I would also like to express sincere gratitude to all the member associations who supported me, as well as those who participated in the elections. It’s a reflection that democracy is alive in the CFU, and this is what we must build on in going forward as a Union”, the CFU Boss posited.
The elected nine-member Executive of the CFU does not include anyone from the more developed and successful football nations of the Union: Jamaica, Haiti, Cuba, and Trinidad & Tobago.
