Three Lindeners among four charged in Berbice MoneyGram robbery

THREE Lindeners are amongst four persons charged with robbing a MoneyGram outlet at Armadale,West Coast Berbice.

The quartet, Deon Adonis, aged 37, a lumber dealer of Lot 289 One-Mile Wismar; Lindon Couchman, 50, a businessman of Lot 244 South Amelia’s Ward; Marvis Fraser, aged 27, a labourer of Lot 43 Block 22 Wismar,Linden; and Alfred Branche aged 40, a businessman of Annandale, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh at the Whim Magistrates Court, where they were not required to plead to a joint charge of robbery under arms.
The men were each ordered to post $200,000 bail, and are expected to return to the Fort Wellington Magistrates Court on September 23.
The case for the prosecution is that on September 4 last, the men, being armed with guns went into the internet café owned by Kalamattie Persaud, where the cashier Malisa Nelson, and Brijnauth Baldeo were robbed of cash and jewelry totalling $3,219,227.
After the robbery the men, who were masked,fled eastwards in a Toyota Blue Bird motor car to which a false number plate was affixed .
During their escape, ranks attached to the Fort Wellington Police Station were alerted, but the police vehicle encountered mechanical difficulties, moments before the getaway vehicle disappeared at Bath Settlement; there the men allegedly changed the number plate of the vehicle and their clothing .
Subsequently, the patrol squad was informed about the men’s whereabouts and they apprehended them as they were leaving the West Coast Berbice village.
A search conducted on the alleged bandits and the vehicle unearthed a bag and a cap, which witnesses said were used by the perpetrators. The money and the gun were not recovered.
