THE THIRD annual Winston Murray Memorial 10/10 softball cricket competition is set to bowl off this Sunday at the Guyana National Industrial Corporation (GNIC) ground, where eight teams will be doing battle for the top prize of $100,000 and trophy, from 0800hrs.This was disclosed by organizar of the one day tournament Samuel Kingston, prior to the draw yesterday afternoon at the GNIC, ground on Woolford Avenue, wherein Kingston said he was pleased to be organizing the tournament which us being held to the memory of the late Murray.
Prior to his death and before the ruling People’s Progressive Party/Civic assumed office in 1992, Murray served Guyana in the capacity of Minister of Trade and Tourism and Deputy Prime Minister and was an ardent sports fan.
Before this year’s tournament, the previous two years saw the competition being played in the Essequibo Island of Legaun, but with Murray living a considerable amount of his life in Georgetown, the organizars saw it best to have the tournament here in the Capital City.
The eight teams are Omesh XI, Farm XI, Young Warriors, Trophy Stall, Hyde Park, Regal, Brickery and Speed Boat and the fixtures for Sunday are as follows, Trophy Stall and Regal will meet in the first game, Omesh XI will oppose Young Warriors, Brickery faces Speed Boat and Hyde Park clash with Farm XI.
The winner of the first match will oppose the winner of the second in the first semifinal, while the winners of matches three and four will do battle in the second semifinal, following which the two winners will square off in the final, where the losing team will take home $50,000 and a trophy.
Individual prizes for Best Batsman, Bowler and Most Discipline Team, will be up for grabs with the Man of the Match in the finals taking home $5,000 and a trophy.
