`The Hammer’ confident of crushing Conquerors – Dover

DESPITE having two of their main players sidelined by injuries, Alpha United are confident of defeating Fruta Conquerors when the STAG Beer finale kicks off at the GDF ground this evening.
The country’s leading club would be without tested midfielder Dwayne Jacobs and defender Chris Camacho both of whom are nursing injuries. However, Alpha coach Wayne `Wiggy’ Dover believes that a victory is within grasp once his side remain focused. “We have a firm, well-trained and confident team going into the match against Conquerors. I see a confident group of players who want to do well,” Dover said.
According to Dover, the question mark that lingered over the head of dependable midfielder Dwight Peters has been lifted. Peters had sustained an injury to his left ankle which has healed. “I am glad to say that Peters has been cleared to play which adds to the overall confidence in the team.”
In addition, talented striker Anthony `Awo’ Abrams is set to play his first game for the club in two years. Abrams sought a transfer to Slingerz but recently returned to Alpha. “`Awo’ adds to the roundness of the team and I cannot see why we shouldn’t come out with a victory,” Dover declared.
Marksman Delon Lanferman will lead Alpha’s strike force. Lanferman was the joint top scorer in the first round of the competition with a tally of 10 goals. Philbert Moffatt, Anthony Benfield and Peters are down to control the midfield.
Just two days ago Alpha president Odinga Lumumba read the Riot Act to club members and threatened to pull the plug on supporting the entity if there were no visible signs of overall improvement in the near future.
The outspoken Lumumba lashed out at the lackadaisical attitude shown by players and warned that the writing may be on the wall for quite a few players.
Alpha, arguably one of the English-speaking Caribbean’s best teams, have been winning competitions over the years but in recent times have been forced to scrape home.
Lumumba, who became president of the Alpha over a decade ago and has guided the club from being the whipping boys of Guyana to one of the Caribbean finest, underlined absenteeism at practice, and players’ general conduct during matches as the genesis of the club’s poor showings.
