‘Terrorist’ escapes police custody in Wakenaam

A MAN being taken to the Essequibo Island of Wakenaam under police escort yesterday morning escaped from custody soon after his arrival.Joseph Khanai, 43, called “Terrorist” of Zeelugt, East Bank Essequibo, who is being accused of stealing cows, was set to attend the Wakenaam Magistrate’s Court today.

According to reports, Khanai previously escaped from police custody for other offences, and has also been accused of stealing sheep and taking them to Parika to sell.

Police sources have revealed that Khanai was handcuffed when he fled into the bushes shortly after he arrived on the island. He was being transported from Georgetown via Parika to Wakenaam.

Sources close to the matter say that the policeman from whom he escaped is likely to be placed under close arrest.

It was noted that Khanai previously lived on the island of Leguan before moving to Zeelugt.
