Taxi driver remanded for robbery under arms

TWENTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD, Jesse Knight of Lot 311 Independence Boulevard, Georgetown appeared yesterday before Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a charge of robbery under arms.

Particulars of the charge which Knight faces detail that on September 12 at Robb Street, Georgetown, being in company of another and armed with a gun, he robbed Desiree Fredericks of $10,000 in cash.

Knight pleaded not guilty to the charge, and his attorney-at-law, Ms. Kayreen Stephenson, told the court that her client does have any prior or pending matter.
Defence counsel also claimed that no identification parade had been conducted.

Representing the prosecution was Police Inspector, Michael Grant, who opposed bail on the grounds of the nature and gravity of the charge, and the fact that a firearm had been used in commission of the offence.

The prosecutor said that at around 02:00 hrs on the day in question, the virtual complainant was in her apartment when the defendant and another person entered through an open door, and demanded that the victim hand over her cash and jewellery.

The VC told the duo that she had only $10,000, which the duo took and made good their escape. The VC then reported the matter to the Alberttown Police Station, investigations were carried out, and the defendant was arrested in a taxi and taken to the station, where he was positively identified by the VC as one of the persons who had robbed her.

The prosecutor explained that Fredericks had said her home was lit, and she had also known the defendant from before.

The driver attached to Gem’s taxi service was refused bail, and the case was transferred before Magistrate Judy Latchman for report and fixtures on September 30.
