St Lucia, Haiti routed to continue losing streak

SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras (CMC) – St Lucia and Haiti suffered heavy drubbings on day four of the CONCACAF Under-17 Championship, as their weak start to the competition continued here Tuesday. While St Lucia were battered 6-0 by Mexico, their French Caribbean neighbours Haiti were stunned 7-0 by Panama, as both Caribbean Football Union sides slid to their second defeat of the tournament which kicked off last Friday.

In the other game Tuesday’s triple-header, Canada edged Costa Rica 3-2.
Playing at the Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano, St Lucia were floored by braces from Ulises Torres and Jose Gurrola as Mexico produced a strong second-half showing, to run out easy winners.
Down 1-0 at half-time through Torres’ 44th minute strike, St Lucia failed to withstand the Mexicans’ second half blitz, and were down 2-0 just 13 minutes after the break when Kevin Magaña converted Gurrola’s cross from the right side.
Gurrola, who came off the bench in the 58th minute, glanced in a close-range header following Eduardo Aguirre’s cross to make it 3-0 four minutes later and the Mexicans were in full control when Kevin Lara knocked in a rebound in the 72nd minute, after missing a penalty moments before.
Five minutes later, Gurrola completed his brace with a shot from 13 yards out and Torres got his second deep in stoppage time at the end when he headed past the outstanding St Lucia goalkeeper Viannie George.
Haiti, meanwhile, were hammered by Panama, with Leandro Vila and Ronaldo Córdoba leading the way with braces.
Córdoba opened the scoring in the 10th minute after capitalising on a weak goal kick from goalkeeper Emmanuel Chery and Avila added a second four minutes later following a fine individual effort.
Oliver Beckles and Cordoba then scored in the space of three minutes as Panama rushed to a 4-0 lead after 21 minutes.
Adalberto Carrasquilla grabbed another on the stroke of half-time just minutes after Erickson Joseph Junior was sent off for a high boot.
Avila completed his brace seven minutes after the break and José Rodríguez snatched a goal ten minutes from the end to complete the rout for Panama.
