SLINGERZ Football Club bounced back after two draws to taste victory for the first time in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Stag Elite League last evening at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) Ground. The West/Demerara based team trounced Monnederlust 3 – 0 to move up to five points behind current League leader Fruta Conquerors who are on six. Slingerz are also the only team in the league with a clean sheet after three rounds.
Last night Monnederlust’s approach was decoded by the opposition quite early which led to them being on the defensive end for most of the encounter. Even when they had chances to score it was squandered by possession change or no one was moving forward in support.
As the game progressed they withered under the pressure of the Slingerz offence. Tichard Joseph put Slingerz ahead in the 21st minute via a penalty which was picked up for a foul in Monnederlust’s 18-yard box.
Dwain Jacobs doubled his side’s lead in the 37th minute when he finished effortlessly in front of goal following a cross from the left flank. The very next minute the third and final goal of the match was recorded when Vurlon Mills got a break away, pressed toward goal and finished past the custodian.
Up to press time Alpha United and the home team, GFC, were preparing for action in the feature match of the double header.
The league continues tomorrow at the Tucville playfield with another double-header. At 18:00 hrs Pele takes on Buxton United then the night will wrap up when Fruta Conquerors go head-to-head with the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) from 20:00 hrs.
