Shortage of Court reporters halts judge’s summing-up

JUSTICE Franklyn Holder, the presiding Judge in the K & VC Hotel murder trial, had planned to sum up the evidence Wednesday.Following this, he was expected to hand over the case to the jury for their consideration and verdict in relation to accused Vinod Balgobin. But this did not happen.

Balgobin, who is facing trial for the murder of his wife Maryann Sunita Nauth, is alleged to have knifed his wife to death after taking her to room 209 of the hotel for sex and had observed that when she stripped, she had tattoos on her abdomen.
This, he is alleged to have told the police in a confession statement, led him to conclude that his wife was giving him “blow.”
He told the police that got him vexed and as a consequence, he “jooked up” his wife.
The woman was later found dead on the bed in the hotel room.
But at his trial, the accused represented by veteran lawyer Mr. Compton Richardson, pleaded not guilty and claimed that the caution statement had been manufactured by the police.
The prosecution denied the allegation by the accused.
After it was learnt that the two reporters who are normally hired to take shorthand notes of the summing-up were engaged with another judge, Justice Holder had no alternative than to further put off his summing –up to Monday.
