Shopkeeper refused bail for drug-trafficking

A SHOPKEEPER of Lot 489 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was yesterday refused bail by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a drug- trafficking charge.Melroy Hopkinson pleaded not guilty to the charge that said on March 24 at Lot 489 East Ruimveldt, she had in her possession 64 grammes of cannabis-sativa (marijuana) for the purpose.

According to the prosecution , on the day in question ranks from the Police Narcotics Branch acted on information and made a search at Hopkinson’s shop. As a result of the search, the illicit substance was found in the ceiling of the shop, which is accessible from the inside only. Subsequent to the discovery, the businesswoman who resides with her mother and children denied any knowledge of the illegal substance and she was arrested and charged.
Representing the defendant is attorney-at-law Mr. Jad Vasconsellos. He told the court that the prohibited drug was found in the shop which his client operates. He noted that she lives in a range house and the shop is some distance away from her home.
The matter was transferred before Magistrate Judy Latchman and the mother of two will make her next court appearance on April 14.
