Sexagenarian freed of rape indictment

— after VC opts not to give evidence

SIXTY-six-year-old alleged rapist Winston Benn of Limlair Village, Corentyne, walked out of the Berbice Assizes a free man, after the virtual complainant opted not to give evidence against him.The teenage mother of one was 14-years when the accused allegedly raped her between October 1, and 31, 2013.

In the witness box, the teen told Justice Jo Ann Barlow and the mixed jury that she did not wish to proceed with the matter.

She told the court that she is the mother of a two-year-old. Further, she is employed, and would like to move on with her life.

Her mother, who also testified, revealed that the decision was made following a lengthy discussion.

Meanwhile, the judge while dismissing Benn, urged the elder, to use the opportunity to improve his relationship with the younger generation.
