DARREN Sammy has been retained as captain of West Indies ahead of this year’s ICC World Twenty20 World Cup, reports indicated. The 32-year-old was not among the 16 players offered a retainer contract earlier this month, which prompted speculation that he was about to be replaced as head of the team by Barbadian Jason Holder.
The 23-year-old Barbadian is already the captain of the One Day International (ODI) and Test teams, but it seems the Clive Lloyd-chaired panel of selectors will opt for experience when it comes to the shortest format.
Sammy was the man at the helm when the team claimed the title in 2012 and then again when the team reached the semi-finals in Bangladesh, in 2014.
The World T20 gets going on March 16 for the West Indies, as they come up against England in Mumbai. They will also face Sri Lanka, South Africa and a qualifier from the associates.
Despite struggling in the other formats of the game the West Indies are the top-ranked Twenty20 team in the world this year.
