GENERAL Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Mr. Clement Rohee said Monday he was completely ruling out any linkage of politics with the death of 18-year-old Rena Devi Singh, who died in a vehicular accident at Letter Kenny on the Corentyne Highway on Sunday.

Grilled on the issue at the Party’s weekly press conference at Freedom House in Georgetown, Rohee maintained that he would not entertain any such linkage.

“The police will take action; justice will take its course, and I’m sure justice will find its rightful place in determining the innocent and the guilty. It has nothing to do with politics,” he maintained.

Rohee, the incumbent Minister of Home Affairs, said he has not yet heard from the police commissioner on the issue, and he did not yet contact him because investigations are still ongoing, and time is needed for the commander to file a report to him.

Rohee said he was pleased to see the road safety committee re-established in Berbice. “I think that’s a positive development, and we should equally focus on that as well,” he said.

In a press statement, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) expressed its condolences to the relatives of the late Rena Devi Singh. “APNU reiterates its call for stricter methods of enforcement and safer roads. Speeding continues to be a major contributing factor in road fatalities. APNU calls on the Guyana Police Force to put the necessary resources in place to ensure that our highways are adequately policed. Far too many Guyanese have lost their lives on the inadequately patrolled Corentyne Highway and the Soesdyke-Linden Highway,” the APNU statement said.
