GREGORY ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson snatched a draw out of the jaws of defeat for Pele FC against Slingerz FC last evening at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Base Camp Ayanganna ground when the STAG Elite League continued. After Domini Garnett sent Slingerz FC in the lead in the 38th minute, Richardson scored his fourth goal of the league in the injury time (90+2 minutes) to salvage a draw for Pele FC who remained unbeaten and are atop the table with eight points.
FIFA referee Maurice Skeete was in charge of the lopsided contest as Slingerz FC dominated the game from the first sound of the Fox40.
The Vergenoegen-based club were the aggressors at both ends of the pitch and were able to keep Pele’s danger-man Richardson quiet for 90 minutes.
Coming close on several occasions, Slingerz FC goal came when Dwain Jacobs was fouled at about 25 yards out from goal and defender Colin Nelson stepped up to take the kick.
The bulky defender’s left-footed shot swerved around the wall set by Pele and Garnett, going airborne, came crashing in to connect his head to the ball.
The goal, one of the best so far in the tournament, had cemented Slingerz’ dominance in the game.
In the second half, Garnett troubled the goal, searching for his second of the night but the striker squandered his chances
Richardson, though not being his usual troublesome self, with the ball, owing to Slingerz’ tight defending, but like a hunter searching for his daily meal, the player popularly known as ‘Jackie Chan’ delivered when it mattered.
Slingerz FC defenders slipped up at the back and the ball fell in Richardson’s path.
The striker cleverly got around the two defenders and nicely tucked the ball past the St Vincent and the Grenadines Slingerz FC goalkeeper to equalise.
The crowd erupted and by the end of his celebration, referee Skeete blew the game off.
A well-deserved draw for Pele FC while Slingerz picked up their third draw of the league and are now on six points; third on the standings behind Pele and Fruta Conquerors.
