REPUBLIC Bank (Guyana) is once again sponsoring the Mashramani Steel Pan Competition, and they handed over a cheque for $2.8M on Monday to Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Dr. Frank Anthony on behalf of the Ministry in his office.
This contribution towards the steel pan competition by Republic Bank has been going on for about seven years now.
Minister Anthony in brief remarks said that the Ministry is very pleased to be partnering with Republic Bank and this is one of the partnerships that the Ministry always looks forward to.
STEELPAN WORKSHOPS
He recalled that last year there were steel pan workshops where youths were given the opportunity to enhance their skills and the bank was also supportive of that initiative.
He acknowledged that Mashramani is not just about the competitions, but a celebration for everyone to get involved in national life.
A representative from Republic Bank stated that they are proud to be partnering with the MCYS for this initiative.
Also speaking on Monday, Administrator of the National School of Music, Andre Tyndall, disclosed that the Republic Bank/MCYS Mashramani Panorama Steel Band Competition will be held on February 5 and 8 at the Theatre Guild and Cliff Anderson Sports Hall respectively.
Tyndall said that the Pan Jazz, Duet and Solo categories will be contested on February 5 while the school and large band categories will be held on February 8.
“This year’s competition will see fifteen bands competing in the two band categories – these include five large bands and ten school bands,” he said
Apart from that he stated that the funds raised by the competitions will be used to purchase a new steel pan for a school which is yet to be chosen. (Navendra Seoraj)
