ENVIRONMENTAL awareness and participation is critical to environmental conservation and management, participants heard during an interfaith service on Sunday at the West Demerara Regional Hospital to mark the launch of a week of activities leading up to World Environment Day (WED) on June 5, 2016.The event was held under the theme: “Join the race to make the world a better place”.

Opening remarks were given by Regional Health Officer, Deoramdeen Persaud who encouraged the staff to continue the good work of the region, and by extension Guyana.

The Environmental Health Officer attached to three NDCs in Region Three, June Statia-Nedd, who also coordinated the programme, announced that there will be a week of activities that will culminate with awards being given to participants.

She explained that on Monday and Tuesday there will be an inspection and health talk for food establishments within Region Three, followed by an Impromptu Speech Competition for schools on Wednesday.

On Thursday there will be a road march in collaboration with the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) and a Best School Compound Competition will be held throughout the week. The closing ceremony will see awards being given to winners in the various competitions.

World Environment Day (WED) activities take place all year round with the climax coming on June 5th every year. The first World Environment Day was in 1973. World Environment Day is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme and is commemorated with an international exposition in the week of June 5.

Through World Environment Day, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is able to personalize environmental issues and enable everyone to realise, not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents of change in support of sustainable and equitable development.
