REGION 9 (Upper Takatu/Upper Essequibo) organisers have chosen eight athletes to compete at this weekend’s CARIFTA Trials at the Guyana Defence Force Camp Ayanganna ground, commencing at 10:00hrs each day, weather permitting.The organisers have named four athletes in the Under-18 division and another four in the Under-20 age group and among these are two females and one field-event athlete, with the Under-18 athletes being Simona Lawrence who will compete in the 1500m and 3000m, Kerry Joseph – 100m & 200m, Brandon Parks – 200m, 400m, 800m and Nyron Edwards – 3000m.

In the Under-20 division, Mary Leandrew is selected to compete in the 400m, 800m and 1500m, Garville Daniels – 100m & 200m, Deon Jackson – 1500m & 5000m and Leo King the high jumps. All the athletes were selected over the weekend (February 28 – March 1), when trials were held at the St Ignatius Sports Complex.
This weekend, athletes from across the country will seek selection to Guyana’s contingent for the April 6-7, event in St Kitts & Nevis which is open to athletes born in 1998 or later. No athlete can achieve their 18th birthday by December 31, 2015, while U-20 athletes should be born in 1996 or later.
Events in Under-18 division are 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m, high, long and triple jumps, discus, shot put and javelin field events while events in the U-20 division are 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, 3000m/5000m, high, long and triple jumps, discus, shot put and javelin field events.
