PROGRESS is some 80 per cent complete on construction and upgrading of 25 community roads in Region Five, between Mahaicony to the west and Ithaca to the east.Of the 25 community roads currently under construction in a project being executed to the tune of $158M, nine are being done under the capital and land development section of the Regional Democratic Council’s 2016 programme, at a cost of $74M.

Several of these roads are being given asphalt surfaces, which is more expensive than the bitumen surface of the community roads; but these roads will last longer, regional officials have said.
The streets being given asphalt surfaces are the main thoroughfares in the communities, which are benefiting from this improved infrastructure.

Sixteen of the 25 roads are being done under the RDC’s current programme for 2016; six are being upgraded as farm-to-market roads at a cost of $21.5M; and 10 others are being done at a total cost of $52.5M.

Regional officials say the region has saved some money on completed road projects, and this money will be utilised to undertake additional unprogrammed works within the region when all programmed works have been completed.
