THE Alesie rice company in Guyana has expressed interest in having farmers from across Region 10 supply them with cassava for the purpose of export.Representatives of that company met with Region 10 Chairman Renis Morian earlier this week to work out the modalities on how the Region 10 farmers can supply the company with sweet cassava, to be processed and exported to countries around the Caribbean region.
Embarking on a cassava production project, the company has earmarked farmers in Region 10 to be their exclusive suppliers, being cognizant that maximum cultivation of ground provision is best done in sandy and clay soil. The Regional Chairman requested Alesie representatives to complete a proposal which would accommodate negotiation. He would be meeting with farmers from Bamia and West Watooka who cultivate cassava on a large scale, to discuss prices and put in place the necessary systems to meet the demand of the company.
The cassava will be peeled, frozen and packaged before being bought by Alesie. Mr Morian said he was not informed what the finished product will be, but he is aware that it will be exported. His major concern is to have a fruitful negotiation with the company, so that the farmers would get a good deal for their produce and would have a guaranteed market which has limited competition.
The Regional Democratic Council will be assisting these farmers to meet the demand relative to quality and quantity.
The Alesie Group of Companies is an international rice trading company which has branches across the Caribbean and North and Central America. It has been operating in Guyana for 20 years, and serves more than 40,000 farmers, resident in places such as Black Bush Polder and Wakenaam.
