REDO says…

Region 4 Education Month ‘Face the Community’ meetings very productive
–no reports of bullyism received

REGIONAL Education Officer (REDO) of Region 4 (Demerara/Mahaica) Ms Jennifer Bourne says that throughout Education Month the region has seen tremendous progress in the ‘Face the Community’ meetings.

The REDO explained that these meetings target schools at large about issues students face and among the matters addressed were suicide, abuse and bullyism.
In an interview yesterday with the Guyana Chronicle, Bourne said that at present, there have been no reports of matters such as bullyism, etc. She boasted that her Region is one of the few that has no reports of alleged cases of bullyism and intends to keep it that way.
Bourne added that at the moment, there are no special programmes that target bullysim directly. However, she urged that such matters be reported to the schools urgently in order to have them dealt with at the earliest.
She said that well trained welfare officers in the region have been addressing issues from its roots in order to find solutions. She also stated that abuse and related issues will not be tolerated in schools as it is unhealthy for students.
The ‘Face the Community’ meetings were a part of the ministry’s strategic plans for Education Month, and all regions were required to participate.
During the period, the Education Minister and officials visit schools and address matters which students are faced with in order to provide a more healthy and sociable environment.
The ‘Face the Community’ meetings were established years ago to deal with matters of importance in schools countrywide, facilitating participation by parents, students and teachers.
