RANKS at the Brickdam Police Station last Saturday impounded a Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle after it was spotted being driven around in Prashad Nagar, Georgetown, bearing a false registration number. The Guyana Chronicle was reliably informed that the vehicle was seen by a senior public servant who recognised that the registration number had been already assigned to a NZE motorcar. The official immediately telephoned the police.
By the time the police arrived, the driver of the vehicle had disappeared and ranks examined the vehicle and towed it to the Brickdam Police Station. The owner of the NZE whose number the SUV bore was called in by the police to verify that the registration number on his vehicle was authentic and he confirmed this by providing the relevant documents.
The police and the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) then launched an investigation into the matter and found that the Lexus SUV was registered to a re-migrant who resides in Berbice, Region 6.
This newspaper learnt subsequently that the vehicle was brought into the country legally by the owner. According to a source familiar with the workings of the GRA, the owner could face sanctions for the false registration plate.
According to the source, this development also has the potential to cause a review of the owner’s qualification as a re-migrant.
