IN A brief review of the ongoing Joint Services’ “Operation Dragnet”, which the Government launched last December, Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan has reiterated that the fruits of this operation are being realised. He told the Guyana Chronicle on Monday that most of the operations that the security forces have gone on through Operation Dragnet have been successful.

According to the minister, the operations are also seeing mock exercises to deal with potential terrorist threats and other acts that have the potential to destabilize the country.

And specific emphasis is being placed on the operations of the security forces in the city, and how they need to operate should there be a terrorist attack in the capital.

Ramjattan explained that the monitoring of border controls and surveillance operations of the Atlantic Coast continue to be a top priority of the forces involved in ‘Operation Dragnet’.

MORE PATROLS
Ramjattan disclosed that the Guyana Police Force and the other agencies of the Joint Services that fall under the Ministry of Public Security would be boosted with vehicles and other resources to function more effectively, based on finance allocated to his ministry. He said that more patrols would be undertaken by the security forces, as funds have been earmarked for the purchase of vehicles; and once the budget is passed, the tender process will be engaged to acquire the vehicles.

He reiterated that the crime situation in the country has decreased, particularly serious crimes, and this is credited to the work of ‘Operation Dragnet’, which has been seeing a greater level of networking between the police, army, prisons, fire service and other agencies.

“And so the fruits of this ‘Operation Dragnet’ are being realised,” the Public Security Minister noted. He reminded that he has been briefing the Cabinet on the crime situation on a weekly basis, and ideas are being shared.

Amid continuing concerns about crime, the Government had announced that the Joint Services will be conducting an operation with the aim of enhancing national security. A release had stated that the Joint Services, comprising the Guyana Defence Force, the Guyana Police Force, the Guyana Prison Service and the Guyana Fire Service, will be conducting ‘Operation Dragnet’ between December 01, 2015, and June 01, 2016, throughout Guyana with the aim of enhancing national security.
