Quartet facing break and enter, larceny charges

FOUR men on Friday appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, to answer a joint charge of break and enter and larceny before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.The quartet, construction workers Suniel Gaj of Section C, and Chabbivnauth Persaud, 24, of Section C, Andrew Calendar, along with Jamal James, all of Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Particulars of the charge said between March 15 and 25 at Grove Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Nankishore Deoraj and stole two toilet bowl sets and two complete sink sets, together valued $98,000.
The prosecution alleged that on March 15, Deoraj secured his house, leaving the articles mentioned in the charge intact.
On his return on March 25, he discovered one of his windows broken. However, subsequent checks revealed that the articles stated were missing. The matter was reported to the Grove Police station and ranks acting on information, went to Gaj’s home where they found the items. He was then arrested and investigations revealed that the defendants were jointly soliciting markets for the items.
According to Gaj, he was at a Chinese shop when a man offered him the items to buy and he bought them. After his explanation, a not guilty plea was recorded.
Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, opposed bail on the grounds that the police are investigating several other matters in which the men are allegedly involved. He added that if granted bail, the accused men may not return to answer the charges.
The prosecution’s objection was upheld and the matter was transferred to the Providence Court.
