OPHTHALMOLOGISTS from across the country yesterday received a special lecture on laser matters from Quantel Medical’s Laser Clinical Development Specialist Mr. Stephane Brion, and Eye See You Ophthalmic’s Mr. Sunil Moonasar.After the lecture, which was held at the GPHC’s Resource Centre, demonstrations on how to use the lasers were also done by Mr. Brion on patients.

The main purpose of the training was to familiarise doctors with the lasers, since the hospital will soon be introducing retinopathy screening and laser treatment for diabetic patients.

This initiative, a component of the Guyana Diabetes Care Project, will for the very first time be held in the public system. It is expected to last for three years, but based upon the success of the project, further planning will be considered for its extension.

Among the visiting team were Doctors Ronnie Bhola and Dorian Dwarika. Dr. Bhola is a prominent Vitreo Surgeon from Trinidad, who deals with most of Guyana’s diabetic and retinal cases.
